Teen Dies Weeks After High-Speed Crash Sent Car Airborne Into Utility Pole Near Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Del. — An 18-year-old Georgetown man has died nearly four weeks after suffering critical injuries in a violent single-vehicle crash that sent his car airborne and into a utility pole, Delaware State Police announced. The death has turned the May 1 collision into a fatal crash investigation.

The victim, Pablo Pineda Pindea, 18, of Georgetown, died on May 26 from injuries sustained in the crash, according to Delaware State Police.

Crash Began With Vehicle Traveling at High Speed

The collision occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on May 1 on Bethesda Road north of Avenue of Honor near Georgetown.

According to the preliminary investigation, a Honda Accord was traveling northbound on Bethesda Road at what investigators described as an apparent high rate of speed.

State Police said the vehicle lost control and left the east side of the roadway.

The Honda then struck a culvert ditch, causing it to become airborne.

Investigators said the vehicle subsequently collided with a utility pole and overturned.

Driver Ejected From Vehicle

The impact sequence resulted in the driver being ejected from the Honda.

Police said Pineda Pindea was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital with critical injuries.

Despite weeks of medical treatment, authorities said he succumbed to those injuries on May 26.
