A Maryland man’s quick stop at Sheetz turned into a $50K Lottery payday after a ticket scanner delivered an unexpected message
Baltimore, MD — What started as a routine stop for a bottle of water ended with a Hagerstown Lottery player holding a scratch-off ticket worth $50K after a chance purchase at a Frederick Sheetz delivered one of the game’s top prizes.
The Washington County resident claimed a $50K prize from the Maryland Lottery’s $5 Winning Streak scratch-off game after purchasing the ticket at Sheetz, located at 1300 East Patrick Street in Frederick.
The winner told Lottery officials he began playing scratch-offs about three years ago after noticing other players celebrating big wins while checking their tickets.
His first notable win was $3,000, but nothing prepared him for what happened when he scanned his Winning Streak ticket.
According to the player, the Lottery vending machine displayed a message instructing him to take the ticket to the Lottery.
Unsure whether he had actually won, he took the ticket home and examined it more closely.
The player eventually noticed a fingers crossed symbol matched with a $50K prize amount but still wasn’t convinced he had won.
He returned to the store and asked a clerk to verify the ticket.
The clerk confirmed the prize and advised him to secure the ticket and schedule an appointment with the Maryland Lottery to claim the winnings.
The winner said the money will help cover upcoming expenses and that he plans to continue playing.
The winning ticket was sold at the Frederick Sheetz, which will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.
