Prosecutors say the arrest followed an investigation into fentanyl distribution after a rise in overdose incidents in Poughkeepsie.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — A Dutchess County woman has been charged with felony drug possession after investigators linked her to an alleged fentanyl distribution operation during an investigation launched in response to a spike in overdose incidents in the City of Poughkeepsie.
The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office announced that Amanda Crain, 30, was arrested following an investigation by the Drug Task Force into the distribution of fentanyl and cocaine within Dutchess County.
According to investigators, the probe began after Drug Task Force agents were alerted to a significant increase in overdose incidents involving vulnerable individuals in Poughkeepsie and other communities throughout the county.
Authorities said information gathered from community sources indicated that cocaine and crack cocaine being sold in the area were allegedly being mixed with fentanyl, contributing to the increase in overdoses.
Using intelligence-led policing strategies, investigators identified areas where narcotics were allegedly being distributed and conducted surveillance and investigative operations. With assistance from the City of Poughkeepsie Neighborhood Recovery Unit and information provided by anonymous community members, investigators identified Crain as a suspect.
During the investigation, Drug Task Force agents conducted what prosecutors described as a controlled purchase of fentanyl from Crain.
On June 18, agents arrested Crain in the Rose Street area of Poughkeepsie. Prosecutors allege she was found in possession of several vials of fentanyl that were packaged for sale and ready for distribution.
Crain was charged with one count of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class B felony.
She was arraigned in City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to the Justice and Transition Center, formerly known as the Dutchess County Jail.
The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office said the investigation remains part of broader efforts to address drug trafficking connected to recent overdose cases.
As with all criminal cases, the charge is an allegation, and Crain is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
