Ohio widow’s anniversary gift to herself becomes winning scratch off

A grieving Ohio widow says an unexpected urge to stop at a gas station led her to a $30,000 scratch-off prize just days after the anniversary of her husband’s death.

MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio — An Ohio widow turned an unplanned stop at a gas station into a $30,000 lottery win after buying herself a scratch-off ticket during an emotional trip in June.

Angie said she was returning home after babysitting her grandchildren in Morrow County when she decided to stop at Certified Oil #208, located at 197 S. Main St. in Mount Gilead.

The stop came near the anniversary of her husband Steve’s death. He died three years ago, one day after their wedding anniversary on June 16.

While at the station, Angie bought four Ohio Lottery scratch-off tickets as an anniversary gift to herself. She chose higher-priced tickets because that had been her husband’s tradition.

As she scratched the $30 Wild Cash Tripler ticket, she initially believed she had won $1,000. But as she continued revealing the ticket, the total prize climbed to $30,000.

After mandatory state and federal tax withholdings totaling 26.75%, she will receive $21,975.

Angie plans to use the winnings to pay off a loan she took out after replacing the engine in her vehicle and making major repairs to her late husband’s truck.

The win was not the first time the couple experienced lottery luck.

Several years earlier, Steve purchased lottery tickets and left them in his truck. Months later, Angie found the tickets, scanned them before heading to the racetrack, and discovered one was worth $30,000. The couple used those winnings to remodel their home.
