First responder turns Powerball ticket into $100K wedding boost

A Virginia first responder doubled a Powerball prize to $100,000 after adding Power Play to a ticket purchased in Colonial Beach.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VA — A first responder from Westmoreland County is celebrating a $100,000 Powerball win after a ticket purchased in Colonial Beach matched enough numbers to double the prize with the Power Play option, according to the Virginia Lottery.

The winning ticket for the Saturday, June 27, Powerball drawing was purchased at the Stop In Food Store, located at 2930 Kings Highway in Colonial Beach.

Virginia Lottery officials said the winner matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball. The prize would normally have been $50,000, but the player added the Power Play option for an extra dollar, doubling the payout to $100,000.

The winning numbers were 13, 14, 16, 21 and 38, with Powerball 14.

According to the Virginia Lottery, the winner and his fiancée selected their own numbers at random.

When he checked the ticket after the drawing, the first responder recalled thinking, “Okay, this is NOT real!”

The couple told Lottery officials they plan to use the prize money to help pay for their upcoming wedding.

Virginia law allows Lottery winners to remain anonymous, and the winner’s identity was not released.
