A juvenile fled from a traffic stop carrying a rifle before a police K9 tracked him down and officers recovered a stolen firearm, Virginia Beach police said.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A juvenile is facing multiple charges after police say he ran from a traffic stop carrying a stolen rifle before being tracked down by a K9 officer in Virginia Beach.

According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, the incident began at approximately 1:33 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, when a police supervisor conducted a traffic stop in the 2200 block of Cypress Avenue.

Police said a rear-seat passenger fled on foot carrying a rifle toward the 700 block of 21st Street.

Officers assigned to the Ocean Front Community Oriented Police Squad established a perimeter while the department’s Special Operations K9 Unit tracked the suspect.

The juvenile was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators recovered the rifle, which police said was equipped with an extended 30-round magazine.

A preliminary investigation determined the firearm had been reported stolen in North Carolina.

Police also alleged the juvenile was in possession of marijuana and oxycodone, a Schedule I/II controlled substance.

The juvenile faces petitions charging possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, possession of a firearm while possessing a Schedule I/II controlled substance, possession of an extended magazine, possession of marijuana by a person under 21, and curfew violations.

The investigation remains ongoing.
