Nearly a Dozen Dogs and CatsRescued From ‘Deplorable Conditions’ in Neptune Township

Authorities rescued 10 living animals and discovered the remains of a dead pit bull while investigating an anonymous report of suspected animal neglect in Neptune Township.

Neptune Township, NJ – Nearly a dozen animals were rescued from what authorities described as deplorable living conditions at a Neptune Township property, where investigators also discovered the remains of a deceased pit bull, according to the Monmouth County SPCA.

The investigation began after an anonymous resident reported concerns about animals living in unsafe conditions. Officers from the Monmouth County SPCA Animal Control Division responded with the Neptune Township Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Monmouth County SPCA said animal cruelty charges have been filed, although officials have not yet released the identity of the person charged.

Investigators rescued eight kittens from what the shelter described as a filthy outdoor enclosure.

The kittens appear to be suffering from upper respiratory infections and are receiving veterinary treatment at the Monmouth County SPCA shelter.

“While they are scared and confused, they all seem to be in good spirits, and are happy to have a safe, comfortable space to live in,” the Monmouth County SPCA said.

Authorities also found two female pit bulls living in an overgrown chain-link enclosure with plastic dog houses and baby pools.

According to the shelter, the dogs had no food or water, were underweight, had overgrown nails, and were missing patches of fur. Veterinarians determined both dogs had likely been bred multiple times, although ultrasounds confirmed neither was pregnant.

Investigators found remains of deceased dog

During the investigation, officers also discovered the remains of an adult pit bull inside a garbage container on the property.

“Sadly, one adult pitbull’s remains were found in a garbage pail on the side of the house. While the cause of death remains unclear, the cruelty and neglect are obvious,” the Monmouth County SPCA said.

All surviving animals are now receiving care at the shelter.

The Monmouth County SPCA thanked Lt. Paul Monahan, Detective Chris Sibole, Officer Cadell Kennedy, Officer James Martin, members of its Animal Control Division, and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office for assisting in the investigation and expediting the animal cruelty charges.

The shelter is seeking donations to help care for the rescued animals, noting that taking in 10 additional animals has placed added strain on its already full facility.
