ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD – A burglary reported early this week escalated into a vehicle theft, with a van taken from the Midlothian/Frostburg area, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office. The agency said the vehicle was stolen during the incident and may have been seen traveling through the area later that morning.
“Burglary Ends With Stolen Van,” the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office stated in its public alert, noting that investigators are actively seeking information about the vehicle’s whereabouts.
Community asked to review footage and report sightings
Authorities are asking residents across Midlothian, Frostburg, and nearby communities to check any available surveillance systems for clues. “We are asking residents to review the image and contact us if you have seen this vehicle or know its current location,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials emphasized that the van, if spotted during the morning hours, was not being driven by its rightful owner. “If you observed this vehicle during the morning hours today, please be advised that it was not being operated by the lawful owner,” the agency said. “If you saw the van, please contact the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office with the location, approximate time, and direction of travel. Even the smallest detail could be valuable to investigators.”
Residents are specifically encouraged to review home security cameras, doorbell systems, trail cameras, and dash cameras for any footage that could assist in the investigation.
Precautions urged as investigation continues
While the incident remains under investigation, officials said there is no indication of a broader threat at this time. “At this time, we believe these to be isolated incidents,” the sheriff’s office said.
Even so, authorities are reminding residents to take preventative steps to protect their property. “Please ensure that vehicles, trailers, ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, and tools are secured whenever possible,” the agency said. “We also encourage owners to keep records of serial numbers, VINs, photographs, and current insurance coverage, as these can be invaluable in the event of a theft.”
