Child died at scene after collision at intersection
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A 7-year-old child riding a bicycle was killed Friday evening after entering a Williamstown intersection and being struck by an eastbound vehicle, according to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:39 p.m. Aug. 7 at the intersection of Main Street and Buxton Hill Road.
Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was traveling east on Main Street while the child was riding a bicycle down Buxton Hill Road toward Main Street. Investigators said the bicyclist unintentionally entered Main Street, where the collision occurred.
The child suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs. The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The bicyclist was identified only as a 7-year-old Williamstown resident. The family has requested privacy.
Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue urged the public and media to respect the family’s wishes during what he described as an “impossibly difficult situation.”
The investigation remains active.
The response included the Williamstown Police Department, Williamstown Fire Department, Northern Berkshire EMS, Massachusetts State Police Cheshire Barracks, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
