NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — A Clifton man has been arrested in connection with a fatal multi-vehicle crash that killed a North Bergen woman and injured five others earlier this year, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested Mahmoud Khalifa, 21, on Monday in connection with the May 30 crash.
Khalifa is charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, five counts of assault by auto, and causing death while driving with a suspended license. Following his arrest at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, he was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
Multi-vehicle crash killed North Bergen woman
The crash occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on May 30 near the intersection of Tonnelle Avenue and 70th Street in North Bergen.
Responding officers found four heavily damaged vehicles at the scene: a tractor-trailer, an Alfa Romeo Giulia, a Hyundai Tucson, and a BMW 435i driven by Khalifa.
Police said Karen Velasquez-Ochoa, 34, of North Bergen, the driver of the Hyundai Tucson, was found unresponsive inside her vehicle and was pronounced dead.
According to prosecutors, four occupants of the Alfa Romeo and a passenger riding in Khalifa’s BMW were also injured and received medical treatment.
“Members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested a driver involved in a fatal crash that occurred in North Bergen on Saturday, May 30, 2026,” the prosecutor’s office said in announcing the charges.
The charges are allegations, and Khalifa is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
