Police say evidence recovered from an SUV connected the Sicklerville man to other shed break-ins
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ – A suspected serial shed burglar’s alleged getaway unraveled when Gloucester Township officers spotted an SUV fleeing a Sicklerville break-in, leading to a pursuit, a foot chase and the discovery of evidence police say connected the 60-year-old suspect to other burglaries.
Darryl Hill, of Dickenson Drive in Sicklerville, was arrested following the July 21 incident and has since been charged with three counts of burglary, two counts of theft and single counts of eluding, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
The investigation began at approximately 12:22 a.m. July 21, when officers responded to the unit block of Vance Avenue after receiving a report that someone was actively breaking into a resident’s shed.
Officers arriving in the neighborhood spotted a white Chevrolet Equinox leaving the area, according to Gloucester Township Police.
Police attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over and continued fleeing.
Investigators identified Hill as the driver and went to his Sicklerville residence.
Officers said they saw Hill get out of the Chevrolet Equinox and run away on foot. He was apprehended shortly afterward without further incident.
Police impounded the Equinox and later obtained a warrant to search it.
SUV search expands burglary investigation
Detectives said the search produced evidence associated with other reported burglaries, expanding the investigation beyond the Vance Avenue incident.
Police connected the case to activity reported months earlier on Bainbridge Court in Sicklerville.
In December, officers were called to the unit block of Bainbridge Court after a resident reported an unknown vehicle parked in the driveway.
During that investigation, police discovered outdoor power equipment and bolt cutters staged in a wooded area behind the residence.
Officers also found that the caller’s shed had been forcibly pried open.
Investigators determined that the outdoor power equipment did not belong to that resident. Police said it had been removed from another backyard shed on the same block.
The equipment was ultimately returned to its owner.
Eight charges filed against Sicklerville man
The investigation resulted in Hill facing eight charges in total.
He was charged with three counts of burglary, two counts of theft, eluding, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
Hill was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending further court proceedings.
The charges are accusations, and Hill is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
