BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — An afternoon ride on an electric dirt bike ended in tragedy Wednesday when an 11-year-old girl riding as a passenger was killed and an 11-year-old boy operating the bike was injured after they collided with a pickup truck at a Berkeley Township intersection, prosecutors said.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. near Moorage Avenue and Sherman Avenue.

According to the preliminary investigation, the electric dirt bike was traveling north on Sherman Avenue with the 11-year-old boy operating it and the girl riding as a passenger.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said the dirt bike failed to stop at a posted stop sign at Sherman and Moorage avenues.

It entered the intersection and struck the driver’s side door of a Ford F-250 traveling west on Moorage Avenue, investigators said.

Both children were injured.

The boy was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was treated and released.

The girl was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the collision.

Authorities did not release either child’s identity.

The driver of the Ford F-250 remained at the crash scene and had a valid driver’s license, according to prosecutors.

Investigators said the pickup driver showed no signs of impairment.

No charges were announced.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Berkeley Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the crash.
