CUMBERLAND, Md. – Cumberland Police reported two separate arrests Thursday, including one at a residence posted as unfit for human habitation and another involving suspected fentanyl near Maryland Avenue and Baker Street.
Jessica Dawn Spataro, 35, of Cumberland, was arrested following a trespassing complaint in the 60 block of Marion Street. Police said the structure had been posted “unfit for human habitation” by the City of Cumberland.
In a separate case, Dillen Allen Smith, 32, of Flintstone, was arrested after officers responding to a disturbance allegedly saw him throw items from his pockets onto the ground. Police said those items included suspected fentanyl and controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.
Woman Found in Bed Inside Posted Cumberland Property, Police Say
Officers were called to the Marion Street residence Thursday for a reported trespassing complaint.
After arriving, police saw that the building had been posted as unfit for human habitation by the City of Cumberland. Officers then checked the structure.
“Upon checking the structure, officers found a subject inside, lying in a bed,” the department said in its Friday press release.
Police identified the woman as Spataro and took her to police headquarters. She was issued a criminal citation charging her with trespassing on posted property and released pending trial in District Court.
The department did not provide additional information about why the property had been declared unfit or how long Spataro had allegedly been inside.
Police Report Suspected Fentanyl Discarded During Separate Investigation
The second arrest began when officers responded to the area of Maryland Avenue and Baker Street for a disturbance involving a man.
Police said officers spotted a man walking away from the area who matched the description of the person involved in the complaint. As they contacted him, officers allegedly saw him remove items from his pockets and throw them on the ground.
“Upon further inspection, officers discovered the items to be suspected fentanyl and CDS paraphernalia,” the department said.
Police identified the man as Smith and placed him under arrest. He was taken to headquarters and issued criminal citations for possession of CDS other than marijuana and littering.
Smith was then released pending trial in District Court.
Police described the substance as suspected fentanyl, meaning the department’s release does not establish that laboratory testing confirmed its composition.
Both cases were announced Friday by the Cumberland Police Department. The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
