Police say security footage helped investigators track use of the stolen card
CUMBERLAND, MD – A theft investigation involving money and a gas card reported stolen from a vehicle led Cumberland police to a Hagerstown man who now faces a lengthy slate of theft and credit card charges.
Cumberland Police served an arrest warrant Thursday on 28-year-old Jason Edward Fowlkes Jr. of Hagerstown.
According to police, the alleged victim reported that Fowlkes stole money and a gas card from the person’s vehicle.
An officer investigated the reported theft and reviewed security camera footage from businesses where the card had subsequently been used, police said.
Authorities did not disclose the amount of money allegedly taken or provide details about the transactions investigators attributed to the stolen card.
Fowlkes faces 18 counts of theft under $100, along with charges including theft from $100 to under $1,500, theft scheme from $100 to under $1,500 and stealing another person’s credit card, according to the department’s release.
Police also listed credit card and organized retail theft charges. The department’s published charge listing for the organized retail theft count was truncated.
Following his initial appearance before a District Court commissioner, Fowlkes was released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.
The allegations against Fowlkes have not been proven in court.
