WARETOWN, N.J. – Sunday morning will bring runners, walkers and first responders together in Waretown for the first First Responders Unity 5K — and a temporary traffic change for anyone planning a trip to Corliss Park.
The rear portion of the Corliss Park Lake and Recreation Area will close to vehicle traffic from 8 to 10 a.m., Ocean Township Police announced Wednesday. The department said the restriction is being put in place “out of an abundance of caution” while race participants are in the area.

- People using the dog park, pickleball courts or walking paths can still enter on foot.
Runners Take Over Waretown Sunday Morning
The Waretown First Aid Squad is hosting the event, which includes a 5K beginning at 8 a.m. and a one-mile walk scheduled to start at 8:10 a.m. The event also features first responder vehicles, food vendors and special awards. (New Jersey Monthly)
“We want to unite the three branches of first responders by bringing them together in this event,” organizers said in the event description. Proceeds from the race will support the volunteer Waretown First Aid Squad.
The squad describes itself as a 100% volunteer organization responding to medical emergencies, crashes, fires and other calls in the community. Its members also provide emergency standby coverage at community events.
The race is centered around the Ocean County Training Academy at 200 Volunteer Way, while runners will also come into the Corliss Park Lake and Recreation Area. Registration remains available through race morning, according to the official race registration page.
Corliss Park Remains Open on Foot
The vehicle closure doesn’t mean the recreation area is off limits Sunday morning.
“If you plan to use the pickleball courts, dog park, or simply enjoy a walk around the lake, please park near the Little Red Schoolhouse and access the recreation area on foot,” Ocean Township Police said.
Officers will be stationed around the event to handle parking and traffic and answer questions from visitors.
“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience as we help support this great event honoring first responders,” the department said.
Corliss Park, at 182 Wells Mills Road, is regularly used for community gatherings in Waretown, including Ocean Township’s annual Independence Day celebration.
Once the race traffic clears, police expect the temporary vehicle restriction at the rear of the lake to end at 10 a.m.

The park can still be reached on foot.
Police are directing visitors headed to the pickleball courts, dog park or walking areas to park near the Little Red Schoolhouse.
The race benefits the Waretown First Aid Squad.
The volunteer organization is hosting the 5K and one-mile walk as part of an event bringing together local first responders.
