Trenton lawmakers seek $500,000 for menstruation health public awareness campaign

TRENTON, NJ – Lawmakers in Trenton are seeking $500,000 to implement a menstrual health public awareness campaign in New Jersey.

On Thursday, a bill sponsored by Democrats Shanique Speight, Lisa Swain, and Angela McKnight sought funding in the most recent legislative session.

This menstruation public health bill requires the Department of Health to establish a public awareness campaign concerning menstrual disorders, such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, and the impact of these conditions on fertility and maternal health. 
According to the bill’s sponsors, the campaign will be conducted in Spanish, English, and potentially additional languages. 

The bill also appropriates $500,000 from the General Fund to the department to establish the requisite public awareness campaign. 

“The campaign will provide comprehensive information regarding common menstrual disorders, information concerning educational resources, and materials encouraging individuals to consult a physician regarding menstrual disorders,” Speight said. “The department is to make available on its website information about common menstrual disorders and their effects on maternal health.”
