NEW YORK – In a remarkable display of agility and precision, 18-year-old Cameron Heinig has set a new world record by catching a tennis ball dropped from a staggering height of 469.5 feet. This feat shattered the previous record by a notable 75.4 feet.

The aerial catch was achieved with the aid of Cameron’s friend, Julian, who piloted a drone that released the ball from the specified height. Upon completion of the catch, Cameron shared, “It did not hurt as much as I thought it would. It didn’t hurt any more than a really hard high-five.”

The path to this accomplishment was not a walk in the park, as Cameron and Julian devoted two summers to mastering the task. Initially, they were met with failure.

Cameron mentioned he “didn’t even come close” during their first summer of trials, the unpredictability of the ball’s descent proving a formidable challenge.

Undeterred by initial setbacks, the duo returned the following summer with renewed vigour. Julian fabricated a more accurate dropping apparatus using 3D printing technology for the drone, while Cameron innovated by practicing with a baseball glove initially to better position himself beneath the plummeting ball.

The glove allowed Cameron to familiarize himself with the ball’s trajectory, eventually gaining enough confidence to attempt barehanded catches. The fear of pain was overshadowed by the allure of a Guinness World Records title, Cameron confessed.

Their preparation was thorough, yet the official attempt was temporarily hampered when a surveyor declared the drone too small for an accurate height reading. The setback was mitigated by attaching a reflector prism to the drone, albeit causing a new issue as the added weight strained the drone’s flight capabilities.

Cameron and Julian, however, persevered, and on a final attempt, Cameron caught the ball on the third drop, still with ample drone battery remaining. His background as a tennis player, he believes, endowed him with the enhanced tracking skills necessary for this achievement.

As a token of appreciation for Julian’s crucial assistance, Cameron is now aiding him in a new quest to break the record for the longest sustained note on a wind or brass instrument, a testament to their enduring camaraderie and mutual pursuit of excellence.
