BOUND BROOK, NJ — Somerset County Commissioner Deputy Director Doug Singleterry and Commissioner Melonie Marano announced a collaborative purchase of a 2-acre historic parcel, the site of the 1777 Battle of Bound Brook where British forces clashed with George Washington’s troops.
The property also features an 18th-century stone arch bridge, considered among the oldest in the United States.
Currently owned by a trucking company, the site straddles Bound Brook Borough in Somerset County and Middlesex Borough in Middlesex County. Acknowledging the land’s historical importance, both counties plan to convert it into a public park.
The announcement came during the Middlebrook Symposium at Raritan Valley Community College. Organizers of the event included the Heritage Trails Association, Somerset County Historical Society, the Friends of Abraham Staats House, the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum, the Friends of Bridgewater History, the Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage, and the New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
