RIVERHEAD, NY — Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Andy Sukram, 33, of Flanders, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison followed by three years of post-release supervision. This sentence comes after a jury found Sukram guilty in October of possessing nearly one ounce of crack cocaine with intent to sell.
On February 1, 2023, Sukram was pulled over on Old Country Road in Riverhead by the Suffolk County Police Department. A search of Sukram and his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu led to the discovery of cash, crack cocaine hidden in his waistband, two cell phones, and a digital scale typically used for weighing drugs.
Previously, in 2009, Sukram was convicted of Burglary in the First Degree and Robbery in the First Degree, both Class B violent felonies, and served 12 years in prison. He was on parole for these charges when arrested in February 2023.
On October 26, 2023, Sukram was convicted by a jury of two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, Class B felonies. His sentencing took place on December 4, 2023, before Supreme Court Justice Timothy P. Mazzei. Jason Bassett, Esq., represented Sukram.
District Attorney Tierney commented on the case, highlighting issues within the parole system, as Sukram committed this crime while on parole. This case underscores the challenges faced by the legal system in managing repeat offenders.
