BROCKTON, MA – A Brockton District Court judge sentenced 36-year-old Jacqueline Avelino Mendes to 10 to 12 years in prison for the 2019 fatal stabbing of Jennifer Landry, 41, during a road rage altercation. This announcement came from the Office of Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.
The jury, after two days of deliberation last month, found Mendes guilty of manslaughter and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on June 28, 2019, near 276 Belmont Street and the intersection of Grafton Street in Brockton.
Responding to multiple 911 calls, Brockton Police Department officers and emergency medical personnel found Landry bleeding profusely from a stab wound to the right side of her neck. Landry received immediate treatment on the scene and was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. Due to the severity of her injury, she was later airlifted to Boston Medical Center, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Mendes fled the scene after the stabbing but later turned herself in at the Brockton Police Department, admitting her possible involvement in a stabbing during an altercation with a motorist.
Investigations by the Massachusetts State Police and the Plymouth DA’s office revealed that the incident stemmed from a traffic confrontation between Landry and Mendes, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
