Kansas Car Seller Arrested for Odometer Fraud Charges

WICHITA, KS – A federal grand jury in Wichita has indicted Adam Newbrey, 31, of Derby, Kansas, on charges related to a sophisticated vehicle odometer tampering scheme. Newbrey, who operated three used car dealerships in Wichita—Ideal Motors, Midwest Wholesale, and Prestige Motors—is facing 27 counts of criminal misconduct.

Court documents reveal that between 2020 and 2021, Newbrey allegedly purchased used vehicles from Kansas and Oklahoma, altered their odometers, and then acquired fraudulent titles from the Kansas Department of Revenue that reflected the altered odometer readings. The indictment accuses him of using these falsified titles to sell the vehicles to unsuspecting customers, thereby committing fraud.

The charges against Newbrey include one count of conspiracy to commit odometer fraud, nine counts of odometer tampering, seven counts of mail fraud, nine counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of wire fraud. He made his initial court appearance on March 15, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Brooks Severson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
