HAUPPAUGE, NY — Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment of Jaswinder Singh, a 52-year-old man from Bellrose, Queens, for criminally negligent homicide and other related charges. The indictment stems from a July 3, 2023, incident where Singh allegedly drove a sanitation truck at an excessive speed, leading to a deadly crash on the South Service Road of the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge.

Singh is accused of speeding in a 19-ton truck and failing to stop at a red light, crashing into multiple vehicles, including a Honda Civic driven by 24-year-old Joseph Kelly of West Islip, who died at the scene. The collision resulted in a chain reaction involving five vehicles and a school bus, leaving a debris field of approximately 300 feet.

District Attorney Tierney emphasized the responsibility of drivers to operate their vehicles prudently, particularly when handling large trucks.
