ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A 43-year-old man wanted in connection with an August shooting was arrested Sunday after attempting to flee from officers while carrying a loaded handgun, police said. Juan Maldonado, of Pleasantville, was taken into custody in the 2500 block of Pacific Avenue following a brief pursuit.
The arrest occurred around 6:26 a.m. on October 6 when Officer Michael Regalbuto spotted Maldonado riding a bicycle. Maldonado had an active warrant stemming from an August 17 shooting on the 100 block of North Georgia Avenue, where a man was injured but survived. The Violence Crimes Unit had identified Maldonado as the suspect, leading to the issuance of the warrant.
Upon seeing Officer Regalbuto, Maldonado attempted to evade capture on his bike. Officers Moustafa Maarouf, Aidan Richardson, and Glen Robinson assisted in the chase. During the arrest, Maldonado resisted and reached for his waistband area, where officers later recovered a loaded handgun. Maldonado was also found to be carrying five bags of heroin.
Officers Maarouf, Richardson, and Robinson sustained minor injuries during the arrest and received medical treatment.
Maldonado faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of a defaced firearm, drug possession, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.
