STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A 24-year-old Stafford man was taken into custody Friday night following a brief pursuit with deputies that ended on Baldwin Drive, authorities said. The suspect, Devin Chewning, was charged with felony eluding and reckless driving after attempting to flee a traffic stop on October 4.
The incident began around 9:28 p.m. when Deputy J.W. Ahern spotted an Acura traveling at 66 mph on Northbound Warrenton Road. After the driver abruptly slowed down, Deputy Ahern activated his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over. However, as the Acura approached the red light at the intersection with Cardinal Forest Drive, it accelerated away.
The pursuit continued onto Cardinal Forest Drive and then onto Baldwin Drive, where the vehicle eventually came to a stop. When Deputy Ahern arrived, he observed the driver with one hand extended out of the sunroof and the other from the driver’s side window in a gesture of surrender. Deputies J.T. Forman and C.M. Sterne assisted in taking Chewning into custody.
Chewning reportedly told deputies he fled because he did not have a valid driver’s license and gave up when he realized he was unfamiliar with the area. He was booked at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
