ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — The Atlantic City Police Department (ACPD) held a ceremony today to posthumously honor Patrolman Laverne Harrison Carr, who died in the line of duty on June 6, 1929. Carr, previously overlooked, was recognized in an event that revealed a commemorative plaque at the Clayton G. Graham Public Safety Building.

The Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP) initially identified Patrolman Carr’s line of duty death. Following this discovery, the ACPD made efforts to locate Carr’s family. Assistance came from Ted Greenberg and NBC10 Philadelphia, who helped disseminate the story. Subsequently, two of Patrolman Carr’s great-grandchildren were identified and participated in today’s ceremony.

The plaque, funded by Dick and Cathy Burke of The Irish Pub Atlantic City and Jimmy Binns, now joins those commemorating other Atlantic City police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Chief James Sarkos announced that Patrolman Carr’s name has been submitted to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC. Carr’s name will be etched into the memorial’s limestone walls in Spring of 2024.
