HACKENSACK, NJ — A 46-year-old man from Hackensack was arrested Friday after investigators say he repeatedly sexually assaulted a child over several months across two cities in Bergen County.

Jorge E. Mejia was taken into custody following a joint investigation sparked by a report received Thursday by the Garfield Police Department. Officials say the assaults began in July and took place in both Hackensack and Garfield, with the most recent incident reported just hours before his arrest.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, working alongside police in Garfield and Hackensack, charged Mejia with four counts of second-degree sexual assault and one count of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. According to investigators, the pattern of abuse allegedly unfolded over multiple encounters with a juvenile victim.

Mejia was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance at the Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack. No details about the victim, including age or relationship to the suspect, have been released.

Authorities emphasized that the charges against Mejia are accusations and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Investigators have not disclosed whether additional victims are being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.
