Brooklyn man sentenced to 12 years for stabbing spree in shelter and subway
Brooklyn, NY — A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a string of violent, unprovoked stabbings that left three men seriously injured, including two victims attacked as they slept inside a homeless shelter and another on a subway train.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Abraham Kentish, formerly of the SUS Shelter in East New York, pleaded guilty in July to three counts of second-degree attempted murder. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Adam Perlmutter handed down the prison term on Friday.
Prosecutors said that on November 12, 2023, just after 1:30 a.m., Kentish entered the SUS Shelter on Blake Avenue and stabbed a 70-year-old man 15 times while he was asleep. He then turned on a second man in the same room, stabbing the 38-year-old in the face and elbow before fleeing.
Less than an hour later, Kentish entered the New Lots Avenue subway station, boarded a 4 train, and stabbed a 32-year-old man in the neck as he slept. All three victims survived their injuries, though prosecutors described them as serious and life-threatening.
Kentish was arrested later that morning after NYPD officers recognized him from a description issued in connection with the attacks.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Ainissa Proctor of the Red Zone Trial Bureau, under the supervision of Bureau Chief Karla Watson.
