Man sentenced after attack inside neighbor’s home
BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn man will spend decades behind bars after being sentenced for a violent home invasion and assault on his elderly neighbor that left her with lasting injuries, prosecutors said.
Thomas Johnson, 54, of Brownsville, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison following his conviction on multiple charges, including burglary, sexual abuse, assault and strangulation.
Authorities said the attack occurred in the early morning hours when the 81-year-old victim was asleep inside her Crown Heights apartment.
According to evidence presented at trial, the victim was awakened by a noise and discovered Johnson inside her home.
Prosecutors said he then assaulted and strangled the woman, causing her to lose consciousness. After she regained consciousness and attempted to seek help, he again strangled her until she passed out a second time.
The victim was eventually able to reach her front door and call out for help, prompting neighbors to respond and contact emergency services.
Johnson was arrested shortly after in the hallway outside the apartment.
Officials said the victim suffered serious physical injuries and long-term effects from the attack, including reduced independence due to brain injury.
The case proceeded to trial, where Johnson was found guilty earlier this year before receiving his sentence.
