BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has released crucial information regarding ongoing recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which has left significant damage across the region. Urgent care services, food and water distribution, and shelter locations have been set up to assist residents affected by the storm.
Medical services:
Several Mercy Urgent Care locations are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., including in West Asheville, Weaverville, Brevard, and Waynesville. Novant Go-Health at 349 New Leicester Highway is also open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For emergencies, residents are advised to dial 911.
Search and rescue efforts:
Rescue teams remain active on day six of recovery operations. Authorities have reported 57 storm-related fatalities as search and rescue missions continue.
Food and water distribution:
Beginning at 12 p.m. today, food and water will be distributed at the following locations:
- William W. Estes Elementary, Asheville
- Sand Hill Elementary, Asheville
- North Windy Ridge Intermediate, Weaverville
- Fairview Elementary, Fairview
Free meals are available from Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ and World Central Kitchen at First Baptist Church in Weaverville, starting at 1 p.m. while supplies last.
Shelter availability:
A new family-friendly shelter has opened at the former Gold’s Gym, located at 1815 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville, and includes a playroom for children. Other shelters include:
- A-B Tech Conference Center, 16 Fernihurst Dr., Asheville
- Medical Emergency Shelter at 10 Genevieve Cir., Asheville (for individuals dependent on medical equipment requiring power)
- WNC Agriculture Center (Fanning Bridge Road) is currently full.
Water safety:
Residents using private wells are urged to avoid drinking from them until the water has been tested. Boiling water is recommended for safety.
Recycling and internet access:
Curbie Recycling has resumed limited services. Wi-Fi is available outside the West Asheville Public Library and Pack Memorial Library, with the password “readmore.”
School updates:
Buncombe County and Asheville schools have sustained minimal damage, but remain without water and power. School staff are advised to confirm their safety before returning.
