WASHINGTON, D.C. — A violent confrontation inside a Northeast D.C. apartment building early Sunday morning ended with a suspect dead and three police officers recovering from gunshot wounds.

The shooting unfolded at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Florida Avenue, Northeast, after officers responded to reports of gunfire in the building’s lobby. According to authorities, the suspect initially eluded officers by entering an elevator but later returned to the lobby, where he opened fire on police.

Three officers were struck by gunfire and returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. All three officers were transported to a nearby hospital and reported to be conscious and breathing. The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released, and it remains unclear if he was a resident of the building.

Florida Avenue between 4th and 5th streets has been closed as police continue their investigation. Officials are also working to determine if the officers involved were wearing body cameras during the incident.

Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact their tip line at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
