COLUMBUS, OH – A Briggs High School student was charged after bringing a gun into school on Thursday police reported.
Today, February 10, 2022, at 11 am, Columbus Police Officers responded to Briggs High School, at 2555 Briggs Road, for a report of a student that brought a handgun into school and was fighting with the school security personnel.
An officer arrived on the scene and met with the security staff and other school personnel who had a student detained in the office with his backpack.
The school staff had received information from other students implicating the 15-year-old suspect was bragging about having a handgun in his backpack at the school.
School security staff attempted to search the juvenile suspect’s backpack but he did not cooperate and began to fight over his backpack with the school security officer, prompting the call to Columbus Police.
During the investigation, Columbus Police officers located the handgun inside the student’s backpack. The handgun, a Taurus, a .45 caliber semi-auto pistol was found to be loaded with the chamber empty, but with 8 live .45 caliber rounds of ammunition loaded into the gun’s magazine. A second magazine (extended version) was recovered from the bag and was loaded with 19 live rounds of .40 caliber ammunition.
The juvenile suspect was interviewed by Columbus Police Detective Hettinger with CPD’s Gun Crimes Unit and charged with Carrying Concealed Weapons and Conveying a Firearm into the School Safety Zone.
