Convicted rapist taken into ICE custody after release from Utah prison

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Federal immigration officers in Utah have taken custody of a Mexican national convicted of felony rape after his release from state prison, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The suspect, identified as Marcos Navarez-Zamora, completed a 32-year prison sentence on January 20 before being transferred to ICE custody. The agency confirmed that he is a criminal alien who will remain detained while removal proceedings are underway.

Officials said Navarez-Zamora’s prior conviction involved a violent assault that resulted in a lengthy incarceration. ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents in Salt Lake City took him into custody immediately following his release from the Utah Department of Corrections.

Federal records show Navarez-Zamora had been ordered removed from the United States in a prior immigration proceeding but was allowed to complete his state prison term before transfer. ICE has not announced when deportation will take place but said he will be held pending final removal actions.
