WASHINGTON, D.C. – The D.C. Metro Police Department’s Force Investigations Team, a part of the Internal Affairs Bureau, is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that transpired this Saturday in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue Northwest. The event unfolded at approximately 10:38 AM during a welfare check conducted by Second District officers.
Upon arrival, the officers requested backup from the DC Department of Behavioral Health’s Community Response Team to aid an individual in crisis. The team assessed the individual as an immediate danger to himself and others, necessitating transportation for an emergency evaluation. When officers attempted to handcuff the man, he attacked one officer with a knife.
Despite deploying a taser, which proved ineffective, the situation escalated when an officer resorted to using a firearm, resulting in the suspect being shot. The injured suspect received first aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The same care was extended to the stabbed officer.
28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson of Northwest, D.C., identified as the suspect, was arrested and charged with four counts of Assault on a Police Officer. Following standard protocol, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave. The ongoing investigation will include a review by the United States Attorney’s Office, and body-worn camera footage is set to be released in accordance with D.C. law.
