Cumberland man lands $140k jackpot on fast play ticket

Cumberland, MD – A Western Maryland restaurant manager’s routine stop at a local Sheetz turned into a six-figure surprise when he won $140,569 playing the Maryland Lottery’s FAST PLAY Lucky Numbers game.

Scott Twigg, a Cumberland resident, claimed the progressive jackpot prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Sept. 9, just two days after purchasing the $10 ticket. He said the win will help him buy a home, a car and boost his savings, though he plans to keep working full-time.

Twigg had originally stopped at the Sheetz on Virginia Avenue to cash in about $100 in previous Lottery winnings and intended to buy a MONOPOLY™ scratch-off. When that game wasn’t available, he turned to FAST PLAY tickets instead. After picking up a Lucky Numbers ticket, he scanned it and was told to see a cashier. That’s when he learned he had hit the jackpot.

The winning moment came when one of Twigg’s numbers, an 8, matched the progressive jackpot icon on the ticket. “I said, ‘Why not?’ and she said, because you just won the jackpot,” Twigg recalled of his conversation with the cashier.

FAST PLAY progressive jackpots begin at $100,000 and grow with each ticket sold until a player wins. As of Sept. 9, the Lucky Numbers jackpot had already climbed back above $101,000.

The Sheetz store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 bonus.
