WASHINGTON, D.C. — Darnell Lamont Savoy, 25, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 60 months in prison for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, revealed during an investigation into an October 2022 stabbing incident. This sentencing follows Savoy’s previous release on pre-trial, over federal objections, related to a 2018 shooting of a 14-year-old boy.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Scott of the Washington Field Office Criminal and Cyber Division, and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith announced the sentence. Savoy pleaded guilty on April 17, 2024, to use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense before U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Kelly. Judge Kelly also ordered Savoy to serve four years of supervised release following his prison term.

In 2021, despite objections from the federal government, Savoy was released while awaiting trial on charges related to a 2018 shooting. Subsequently, on October 11, 2022, Savoy allegedly stabbed a person during an argument and fled. Law enforcement tracked him to an apartment in the 3900 block of Southern Avenue, SE, where they executed a search warrant on October 21, 2022.

During the search, authorities found a plastic bag containing 4.55 grams of fentanyl, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia, and $473 in cash. Additional fentanyl and drug-related items were found in a blue jacket belonging to Savoy, along with a loaded, unregistered semi-automatic Glock 30 with 24 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition. DNA testing linked Savoy to the firearm. The drugs were located in an area accessible to a three-year-old child, posing a significant risk of harm.

Savoy, along with Jamal Matthews and Stefon Freshley, also pleaded guilty on March 29, 2024, to their roles in the December 28, 2018, shooting of a father and son in the Clay Terrace neighborhood. During the incident, Matthews fired 30 shots into an SUV, injuring the father and severely wounding the boy. The three men are scheduled for sentencing on August 30.
