DC cops arrest suspect in high-profile Dupont homicide

Suspect arrested in Dupont Circle stabbing that killed Southeast DC man

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred in Dupont Circle late last year, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident took place on the afternoon of December 30, 2024, at approximately 3:58 p.m. when officers from the Second District and U.S. Park Police responded to a report of a stabbing in the popular Northwest park area. Upon arrival, they found 36-year-old Dominique Ratiff, of Southeast D.C., unconscious but still breathing with a stab wound.

Ratiff was transported by DC Fire and EMS to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead after life-saving measures failed.

Following months of investigation, detectives identified Donald Shields of Northwest D.C. as the suspect. On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Shields was arrested pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant and charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed.

Investigation leads to arrest more than four months after deadly attack

The stabbing drew significant attention due to its location in Dupont Circle, a busy and central area frequented by residents and tourists. Police have not released further details regarding a possible motive or whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

Detectives from the Homicide Branch continued working the case in coordination with other law enforcement agencies. Surveillance, witness interviews, and forensic evidence contributed to identifying and locating the suspect.

Shields is currently in custody pending further legal proceedings. The investigation remains active as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
