Cyclist hit by police vehicle in Middletown dies as AG’s office launches investigation

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — A cyclist struck by a marked police vehicle on State Route 36 has died from his injuries, prompting an official investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office into the fatal crash.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, when a patrol officer from the Atlantic Highlands Police Department collided with an adult male riding an e-bike near Orchard Avenue. The man was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he succumbed to his injuries nine days later, on October 19.

The identities of both the officer and the deceased civilian have not been released. The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), under the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, is leading the investigation as required under a 2019 state law. That statute mandates independent review of any civilian death resulting from a police encounter or custody, and requires presentation to a grand jury.

The investigation remains active. No additional information, including whether body camera footage exists or if charges are being considered, has been disclosed at this time.
