A morning commute turned fatal along one of Monmouth County’s busiest corridors as a 22-year-old man was struck and killed Friday in Eatontown, prompting an ongoing multi-agency investigation. The crash unfolded near the Monmouth Mall jughandle, an area known for heavy traffic flow and complex turns, as officials worked to reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision.

EATONTOWN, NJ – A 22-year-old pedestrian, identified as Edwin Chavez-Solis, died Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle on State Route 35, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago. The incident was reported at approximately 7:18 a.m., drawing emergency responders to the southbound lanes near the Monmouth Mall jughandle.

Crash details and response

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2019 Honda Insight was traveling southbound when it struck Chavez-Solis, who was walking from the eastbound side of the roadway. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:40 a.m.

The driver, described as an adult male, was not injured and remained at the scene following the collision. Officials confirmed that, as of now, no charges or summonses have been issued in connection with the incident.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Eatontown Police Department.
