LANHAM, Md. — A Prince George’s County social worker struck it lucky in the Dec. 2 Powerball drawing, winning $50,000 after swapping quick-pick numbers for family birthdates and years.

The Lanham resident made the switch just a month ago, choosing sentimental numbers over the automated quick-pick option he had relied on for years. When he checked the drawing results online, he immediately recognized the winning numbers. “It was such a shock. I called my wife to tell her. She had to sit down to keep from falling,” he said.

The $50,000 ticket was purchased at Landover Hills Exxon on Annapolis Road. The winner explained that he hadn’t planned on stopping for a ticket but decided to grab one while refueling. “I sure am glad it occurred to me to buy my ticket then. I might not have remembered to get one before that night’s drawing,” he said.

The winner plans to use his prize to pay down his mortgage, calling the win “a happy thing” for his family. The lucky gas station where he purchased the ticket could also be a draw for hopeful players as the Powerball jackpot continues to climb.

The jackpot for the Dec. 7 Powerball drawing has reached an estimated $260 million, with a cash option of $123 million.
