Today is the first day of school for most students in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and local police and federal authorities are asking everyone to do their part to make the new school year a safe one
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a comprehensive set of safety guidelines around school buses, targeting not just drivers but also parents and children.
Bus Stop Safety According to the NHTSA, the greatest risk to children is not while riding the bus but when they are approaching or leaving one. Parents are advised to teach their children to arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus’s scheduled arrival and to stand at least six feet away from the curb.
Getting On and Off Safely Children should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the door opens, and the driver signals it’s safe before approaching the bus door. Utilizing the handrails can prevent falls.
Caution Around the Bus Children are advised never to walk behind a bus. If a child needs to cross the street in front of a bus, they should walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus and make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing. If a child drops an item near the bus, they should alert the bus driver rather than attempting to retrieve it themselves.
Safety Tips for Drivers Drivers should be vigilant in neighborhoods with school zones and around bus stops. They should also be aware of children who may dart into the street without looking for traffic. Understanding and obeying school bus laws and the “flashing signal light system” is imperative.
The NHTSA emphasizes the shared responsibility among drivers, parents, and children in ensuring safety in and around school buses.
