Give us your clothes: Toms River launches used clothing recycling program to offset rising taxes

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Toms River Township has a new revenue stream to offset rising taxes in the community. After senior citizens in Holiday City were hit with tax increases as high as 50%, Mayor Maurice Hill today announced a new revenue stream for the township.

“In an effort to reduce recyclable materials in our waste stream and save taxpayers money, the Township has partnered with HELPSY, the largest textile collection company in the Northeast U.S., to offer free home pick-up of unwanted clothing and household textiles to residents,” said Art Gallagher, confidential secretary to Mayor Hill in a statement today.

“We are excited to begin this partnership with HELPSY so that we may combine our efforts to keep unwanted textiles from filling our local landfills, save money on our tipping fees and generate a bit of non-tax revenue,” said Mayor Hill.

“Beginning early March, pickups will happen weekly. Residents can schedule online at www.helpsy.co/tomsrivernj. After filling out a request form online, a driver will be scheduled to pick-up on a selected date. Residents are advised to leave clean, dry, and bagged items outside prior to 7 am the morning of pickup,” Secretary Gallagher said.

In addition to offering home pickups, the Township has authorized 20 AMVET clothing collection bins to be placed at nine strategic locations around the area to offer easy access to residents looking to sustainably dispose of textiles. These bins will be serviced and maintained by HELPSY, while the town will earn a rental fee and reimbursement per pound of clothing collected that can then be used toward other recycling efforts.

The township will be paid about $40 per ton for the clothing.

AMVET’s will also receive a portion of proceeds that will help fund their programs for veterans. See below for a list of bins or go to www.helpsy.co/find-a-bin to find a bin near you.
