Goal Zero crackdown hits New Jersey roads as police honor fallen state trooper

Drivers can expect increased enforcement as officers target Move Over Law violations and dangerous driving behaviors

MANCHESTER, N.J. — Motorists across New Jersey are being urged to slow down and move over as law enforcement agencies launch a statewide traffic enforcement campaign honoring a state trooper who was killed in the line of duty after being struck by a passing vehicle.

On Saturday, June 6, the Manchester Township Police Department will join agencies throughout the state in the Goal: Zero Memorial Enforcement Campaign honoring New Jersey State Trooper Marc K. Castellano.

Trooper Castellano was killed on June 6, 2010, while conducting a search along Interstate 195 in Howell Township when he was struck by a passing motorist.

The annual enforcement initiative serves as a reminder of New Jersey’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility crews, and other roadside workers.

Manchester police said officers will conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement throughout the day with a focus on Move Over Law violations and other dangerous driving behaviors linked to serious crashes and traffic fatalities.

The department said traffic stops, warnings and summonses issued during the campaign are intended to reinforce a single message for drivers: slow down, move over and help protect those working along New Jersey roadways.

The statewide effort is part of a broader goal to reduce traffic fatalities and improve roadway safety.
