Golf guy named Winner bags $1.16M lotto haul

MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP, PA — A Pennsylvania Lottery player from Erie County claimed a $1,162,845 Cash 5 with Quick Cash jackpot prize on Wednesday after matching all five numbers from the June 9 drawing.

Gary Winner purchased the winning ticket at Giant Eagle located at 2501 West 12th Street in Millcreek Township. The jackpot, totaling over $2.3 million, was split between Winner and another player in Butler County, whose ticket remains unclaimed.

The 64-year-old, who is retired and works part-time at a golf shop, said he only plays Cash 5 when the jackpot is high. Seeing that the prize had climbed past $2 million, he spent $20 on Quick Pick tickets. He discovered the win after scanning his tickets inside the store.

Giant Eagle will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Officials from the grocery chain said they intend to donate the bonus to Meals on Wheels Erie, a nonprofit that serves more than 50,000 meals annually to homebound seniors.

Lottery highlights support for older Pennsylvanians

Pennsylvania Lottery officials presented Winner with a commemorative check and praised the retailer for its contribution to the Lottery’s mission of supporting programs for seniors. Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne emphasized the critical role players and retailers play in generating funding for the state’s aging population.

Giant Eagle’s decision to share its bonus with Meals on Wheels Erie was noted by Lottery officials as a meaningful example of community impact through Lottery participation.

The second winning ticket, sold at a 7-Eleven in Butler County, has not yet been claimed. Winners of draw game prizes in Pennsylvania have one year from the date of the drawing to come forward.
