Hoboken unveils plans for waterfront park with beach and fishing along the Hudson River

HOBOKEN, NJ – A new vision for Hoboken’s waterfront shows children casting fishing lines and families relaxing on a sandy shoreline, a scene city leaders say will soon become reality along the Hudson River.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla announced the start of construction this week at the former Union Dry Dock site, calling the project one of the city’s most significant community victories.

The long-disputed property, once targeted for a ferry refueling depot, will now be transformed into a public park connecting the final missing link in Hoboken’s continuous waterfront walkway.

Bhalla said the city’s residents, environmental advocates, and local officials stood together to prevent the industrial use of the site, which he described as a “hostile takeover.”

Renderings of the park depict families strolling a beach-like shoreline and children wading and fishing along the Hudson, imagery that underscores Hoboken’s intent to make the river more accessible to residents.

Victory for open space advocates
The transformation marks the culmination of years of local activism to secure public access to the city’s waterfront, one of its most valuable assets. Environmental groups had long pushed for cleaner, greener recreational space instead of heavy marine industry. The city said construction will proceed in phases and ultimately deliver landscaped trails, play areas, and shoreline restoration designed to improve resilience against flooding.

Former industrial site reimagined
The Union Dry Dock parcel, once a ship repair yard, sits between Sinatra Drive and the Hudson River. Its redevelopment will complete Hoboken’s waterfront park system from the Jersey City border to Weehawken Cove. Officials say the project will also feature ecological enhancements to improve water quality and restore natural habitat along the urban shoreline.

Community-backed design
Public input helped shape the park’s final concept, which combines recreational amenities with environmental protection. The design includes pathways for walking and cycling, open lawns, and the much-anticipated Hudson River Beach Front.

The new Hoboken waterfront park will replace the former Union Dry Dock site with open space, walking trails, and a beach area connecting the final stretch of the city’s riverfront.
