HOLMDEL, N.J. — A 17-year-old from Newark has been charged in connection with an attempted vehicle theft and home burglary on Round Hill, after being scared off by the family dog, police said.

According to Holmdel Township Police, the incident took place at approximately 5:50 a.m. on Jan. 13, when two individuals attempted to open several high-end vehicles parked in the driveway of a residence. When the suspects discovered the vehicles were locked, they gained access to the home through an unlocked rear door.
Once inside, the suspects entered the kitchen area, apparently searching for keys. However, the homeowners’ dog startled the intruders, causing them to flee the residence in a black SUV before they could steal anything.
Evidence leads to teen suspect
Following a detailed investigation led by Detective Maguire, police were able to collect and process evidence at the scene. Authorities also executed multiple Communication Data Warrants, ultimately identifying a 17-year-old suspect from Newark.
The teen has been charged with burglary and conspiracy. No further information about the second suspect has been released.
Police did not report any injuries, and nothing was stolen from the home.
