Pro Palestinian Protester sets self on fire in D.C.

Washington, D.C. – A demonstration in Northwest D.C. on Saturday took a dramatic turn when a man attempted to set himself on fire, prompting a swift response from bystanders and law enforcement.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., during a protest that coincided with the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Samuel Mena Jr., a photojournalist, set his left arm ablaze outside the White House. Eyewitnesses reported that Mena raised his burning arm while shouting his dedication to the children of Gaza. Members of the crowd quickly intervened, extinguishing the flames with water and clothing​.

Following the incident, Mena was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries​(

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived promptly to assist at the scene​

Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department addressed the incident, highlighting the District’s long-standing commitment to supporting peaceful First Amendment activities. She expressed gratitude to the police officers and community members who acted quickly to prevent further harm​(
