WASHINGTON, DC – Flames erupted inside a Southeast Washington apartment Saturday morning, forcing two residents out of their home and prompting a quick response from the DC Fire and EMS Department.

Crews were called to the 1200 block of Chaplin Street SE for a reported Box Alarm. Firefighters contained the blaze to the first-floor kitchen, preventing it from spreading further into the residence.

Residents displaced

Two individuals inside the home were assessed at the scene by EMS personnel. While no serious injuries were reported, officials confirmed the pair were displaced due to the damage.

Stove malfunction suspected

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and may have been caused by a stove malfunction. The department released images of the scene, showing firefighters working inside the charred kitchen.
