Mamdani’s Free Bryant Park Knicks Watch Party Descends Into Chaos After Finals Loss

Multiple arrests were reported after disorder erupted outside a free Bryant Park watch party following the Knicks’ Game 3 loss in the NBA Finals.

NEW YORK — A free New York Knicks watch party organized in Bryant Park descended into chaos Thursday night after the team’s Game 3 loss in the NBA Finals, prompting a significant police response and multiple arrests in Midtown Manhattan.

The watch party, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani ahead of the game, was created to accommodate fans unable to attend a planned gathering outside Madison Square Garden after security concerns tied to President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game led officials to relocate the event.

Key Points

• Disorder broke out after the Knicks’ Game 3 NBA Finals loss.

• NYPD made multiple arrests and reported at least one officer was injured.

• The Bryant Park event was added after security concerns prevented a watch party outside Madison Square Garden.

Officials distributed approximately 5,000 free tickets for the Bryant Park fan zone, which quickly reached capacity. Large crowds gathered around the park and surrounding streets throughout the evening as fans watched the Knicks attempt to even the NBA Finals series.

As the outcome became increasingly apparent, tensions escalated among some attendees. Witnesses reported fights breaking out in multiple areas, while others climbed structures and threw objects into the crowd.

NYPD moves in to disperse crowds

According to reports from the scene, several glass bottles were thrown toward police officers as the situation deteriorated. The New York Police Department formed lines and moved into the area to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Authorities took multiple individuals into custody on charges that included disorderly conduct and assault on police officers. At least one officer reportedly suffered injuries after being struck by a thrown bottle.

The disorder spilled beyond Bryant Park, with police activity extending into nearby Midtown streets as officers worked to clear crowds following the game.

Event created to expand Finals access

Mayor Mamdani announced the Bryant Park watch party earlier in the week as an additional location for fans hoping to watch the Knicks’ historic Finals appearance.

“These watch parties have become a celebration of New York City itself,” Mamdani said when announcing the event. “From every borough and every neighborhood, this city has come together to cheer on the Knicks and share in a moment that belongs to all of us.”

City officials said the event was free to attend but required registration and was capped at 5,000 people.

Frustration mounted on and off the court

The tense atmosphere was fueled in part by a frustrating night for Knicks fans. The game featured several heated moments, including on-court confrontations and disputes over officiating.

Following the loss, Knicks Head Coach Mike Brown expressed visible frustration during postgame interviews, while players and fans alike reacted to a game that left New York trailing in the Finals.

The NYPD has not yet released final arrest totals from the incident, and investigations into the disturbances remain ongoing.
