Man Already Dead in Jackson Roadway Before Dump Truck Ran Over Body, According to Police

Jackson Township, NJ — A man died after being found lying in the roadway on South Hope Chapel Road early Monday, and investigators say a dump truck driver who attempted to avoid what appeared to be debris unknowingly ran over the body. The victim suffered significant head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jackson Township police officers responded to the area of South Hope Chapel Road at approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday following reports of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found an adult male in the roadway with severe injuries.

Emergency responders attempted to render aid, but the man died at the scene.

Evidence Suggests Body Was Already in Roadway

A joint investigation involving the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit found that a Mack dump truck was traveling northbound on South Hope Chapel Road when the incident occurred.

Investigators said the truck’s operator spotted what he believed was debris in the roadway and attempted to avoid it.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the driver then realized the object was a person and, despite efforts to avoid contact, drove over the body.

Key Points

• A man was found dead on South Hope Chapel Road in Jackson Township early Monday morning.
• Investigators say a dump truck driver believed the body was debris before running it over.
• Authorities found no evidence that the truck initially struck the victim as a pedestrian.

Driver Stopped and Reported Incident

Officials said the dump truck driver immediately stopped and contacted law enforcement after the collision.

A post-collision inspection of the truck found no evidence of a direct pedestrian strike to the front of the vehicle, investigators said.

Instead, physical evidence indicated the truck ran over a body that was already lying in the roadway and dragged it a short distance.

That finding has shifted the focus of the investigation toward determining how the victim ended up in the road before the truck passed through the area.

“The operator of the dump truck attempted to avoid what he believed to be debris in the roadway; he then realized that it was, in fact, a body,” the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Questions Remain About How Victim Reached Road

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased man, and investigators have not disclosed whether he may have been involved in another incident before being discovered on the roadway.

The circumstances leading to the victim’s presence on South Hope Chapel Road remain unclear.

Investigators are working to determine the cause and manner of death, as well as whether any events occurred before the dump truck encountered the body.

The case involves multiple agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Jackson Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Investigation Continues

While the collision initially appeared to be a fatal pedestrian strike, investigators now believe the truck did not directly hit a standing or walking pedestrian. Evidence collected at the scene instead suggests the victim was already in the roadway before the truck arrived.

Authorities have not announced any charges, and no allegations of wrongdoing have been made against the truck driver.

The investigation remains active as officials work to determine how the man came to be lying in the roadway and what caused the fatal injuries discovered before the truck passed over the body.
