NEWARK, N.J. — Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who allegedly robbed a man during a pre-arranged phone sale earlier this month.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:38 p.m. on May 11, in the 80 block of Muhammad Ali Avenue. According to police, the victim arranged to meet the suspect through Facebook Marketplace to sell an iPhone 16.

During the transaction, the suspect took the phone and threatened the victim by gesturing as if he had a weapon and stating he would shoot him. No actual weapon was seen, and no injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned male with an afro hairstyle. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a grey sweater and dark-colored pants. He fled the scene on foot.

Authorities request public’s help

Director Miranda urged anyone with information about the suspect to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All tips remain confidential and may qualify for a reward.
